Viewing Thunderstorms from an Airplane ignites the poetry of Marcus Clayton through electronic-based text painting, heavy metal guitar accompaniment, and of course the thunderous vocal tones of Peter Barber. In addition to wild vocal processing and rousing guitar counterpoint to elucidate the apocalyptic poetic gestures, the piece also finds the human fragility and quiet existential suffering we are all enduring in these turbulent times on earth.

Black clouds shine
with the candlelight
of lightning.

They are floors—stories
stacked above Earth
to sneak past plague masks
pecking air out
of grounded lungs. But look
at the beautiful damage
like nylon rope wound
by your own hands.

Watch ballot boxes burst
by bolts of a livid sky.
Torrent of embers
catch dried grass.
When the gravel
becomes gasoline, just look
at the stars. Bright
bodies burn to illuminate
space where clouds eat
our cinder, but see them dance
like rituals for rain
(or do they writhe
like the wood of houses
digested by tornados?)

See how safe
they are from lightning.

We wish to be stars
but become fireballs
when storms clip our wings.

Marvel at us, anyway,
dust and dust and dust,
to hope this is how the world
will end: a basement smolders
but your feet stay cold
—let our ashes
be snow for children
to carve angels with their backs.
